As you grow and continue playing, you learn more about your own abilities. As you gain more experience you can adjust your swing and equipment to give you more distance.

Senior golf is just as relaxing if you play the game right. As you learn over the years what your game is like, you can shift your concentration to the fairway and the greens. You can work your way into some mini tours that will give you even more experience before you make your way to the PGA. If this is your goal, you want to be your best and shoot the game like a pro. Learning The Golf Rules

The US Golf Association (USGA) governs the set of rules that golf players have to strictly adhere to. These include scoring rules, penalties and so on. You could visit the USGA website to understand the rules

http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/rules.html

However, as important as the rules or perhaps even more so is the concept of golf etiquette. Anyone playing golf should familiarize themselves with the dos and don’ts of the links so that at the least they do not end up offending someone and at the worst they do not end up getting hurt. You can find a write-up on golf etiquette too on the USGA website. http://www.usga.org/playing/etiquette/etiquette.html

However, just knowing the rules or the etiquette does not mean that you know how to play golf. The best way to learn golf is to actually go out and play. Perhaps you could have a golf professional give you some private lessons. Any golf course will have contact names and addresses of a few golf professionals who are willing to teach on the side. It is best that you get your game up a little before you start playing with other players. It can be very frustrating if you are a beginner who is trying to get his swing straight while the others have to stand and wait.

Of course, you could also pick up any of the numerous instructional books or videos to pick up the basics. There are books that could tell you about the history of the game, books that serve as biographies of the some of the games biggest players and of course, the step-by-step instructional book. If you are going to practice golf using some instructional books then the best thing is to choose books that contain lots of pictures and illustrations of postures and follow-throughs.

You can always read up on a whole lot of basics but only when you see it do you understand the importance of certain moves. The advantage of these books is that they usually give fairly detailed instructions and also provide the reader sets of drills of increasing difficulty that you could practice at your convenience wherever possible, possibly even in your backyard. If you use these books along with instructional videos that is a great way of both understanding the basics and actually viewing how those shots are played. Most of the times, the videos are hosted by top professional golfers or the game’s well-known instructional coaches. Using these books and videos is almost like having a personal coach training you at times that are convenient for you.

Golf Basic

The vast green expanse where golf is usually played is called the golf course. These courses can be private or public and usually consist of 18 holes, which get broken into two areas – 9 holes to the front, 9 holes to the back. The most basic equipment you would need would be a set of golf clubs and a golf ball. Of course, that is not all. No golfer would be complete without having a pair of comfortable golf shoes, well fitting golf gloves, an umbrella, towels and a golf cart to go around the course.

A standard set of golf clubs will include woods, irons and a putter. The woods will be used to hit the ball the hardest and the longest, typically anywhere from 200-300 yards. The irons include a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. These are used for medium rage shots say anywhere from 20 yards to about 200 yards. And last but not the least, there is the putter, which of course is used to deliver the final blow or the final put and tap the ball gently into the hole.

The main aim of golf is to take the golf ball from the starting point to the hole with as few strokes as possible. You start by teeing off and then try to hit the ball from the fairway to the green area. Of course, things are never smooth and one has to encounter various hazards like water, sand and rough areas like thick grass.
When you start playing golf, you keep track of how many strokes you needed for every hole. You tally all this at the end of all holes and the person who has managed to complete all 18 holes with the fewest number of strokes, is the winner. Each game of golf is called a round i.e. a round of 18 holes.

Let us now look at some of the common jargon employed in Golf game. A game is only as good as its jargon and for most part, the jargon of golf has been fascinating the general public at large. Talks of birdies and being at par or under par seem to dominate any golf conversation.
• The number of strokes that an average player needs to hit the ball from tee-off into the hole is called Par.
• If you are able to hit the ball into a hole with one stroke less than par, then it is a Birdie.
• If you are able to hit the ball with two strokes to spare, then it is an Eagle and three strokes less makes it a Double Eagle.
• And if you are lucky enough to make it in just one stroke, then you have managed a hole in one.
• Of course, if you need one stroke more than par to get the ball into the hole, then it is called a bogey, and two strokes more will get you a double bogey.
