Use Training Aids For Golf Putting

I still think that training aids are a gimmick.

Recently, however, I found myself thinking of using training aids for golf putting. It’s not that I noticed anything different or peculiar – all my game is different and peculiar! That never stopped me from taking on a great challenge. Maybe it’s this angle that got my attention. I’d like to be able to say that I am a good putter.

What’s In A Putt?

Long before training aids for golf putting even existed, back in the days of Putt Putt Golf (if you don’t know what I mean, that’s ok), I used to be a good putter. I was twelve or thirteen and on Saturday mornings I would go clean all the greens and get free golf until noon. Over and over I’d practice angle shots, over the hump shots, bank shots off the windmill, etc. And yes, I was pretty good at it. I almost won a tournament once.

After Puberty

When the time came to hit the real golf links, it wasn’t as a golfer. I became a caddy as soon as they would let me on the course. Carry two bags 18 holes and you know you’ve done something. Do it twice and you’re hallucinating. So, where are the training aids for golf putting? Like I said they just recently began to make sense. It was those memories from the teenage years that suggested training aids for golf putting.

You see, before caddying I would go to the practice green and after caddying I would putt for another hour or so before going home. It dawned on me that if practice is the key, then that same hope for improvement demands I step away from pre-conceived notions about training aids for golf putting. I’m starting slowly, asking friends what they use. The local pro told me his method with only the simplest of queries put in his direction. You’ll just have to try it yourself to see what works for you!

Examples

Examples of training aids for golf putting are keeping a journal, experimenting with weights, using a different putter, watching videos, putting with marbles or tennis balls, whatever works.

Repetition plays its own part, but perfecting a style or approach is better done if it becomes a conscious act – at least in the beginning. Go step by step through the process of putting; even this is a training aid for golf putting. Step by step, putt, putt, putt.
